Finally, after two weeks off because of Tennis preempting Raw as it usually does this time of year on the USA Network, Raw is back on one week after WCW made a triumphant debut with its Monday Nitro program. If you watched Monday Nitro, Eric Bischoff gave away the results of tonight's show as Raw was taped somewhere "two or three weeks ago" and he's not that far off.
They have an unusual new intro as the new "fall season" according to announcers Vince McMahon and Jerry "The King" Lawler even though there are no seasons in wrestling. The intro features WWF Superstars wrestling on top of a building and HBK Shawn Michaels was dancing on top of the giant RAW entranceway. Police run in to stop the madness as Michaels jumps off the top into the ring.
McMahon and Lawler take us back to SummerSlam where Dean Douglas was "critiquing" Razor Ramon's performance against Michaels in the ladder match by giving him a poor letter grade. Razor confronts Dean and ends up knocking him down with a punch.
The opening match of the night was Razor taking on The British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith. Bulldog turned heel when he attacked Diesel three weeks ago on Raw when Raw was last on. Bulldog was accompanied to the ring by his new manager Jim Cornette, who Bulldog joined forces after his heel turn. Bulldog is sporting a new short hair cut and it looks a lot better than that mangy rats nest he had before.
Razor looked to have Bulldog beaten when he gave him the Razor's Edge. However, the referee was knocked out as Dean Douglas jumped off the top rope onto Razor. 1-2-3 Kid ran in but Douglas attacked him. Bulldog gave Razor his running powerslam and covered him. The Kid climbs the top rope and jumps off, but Bulldog moved out of the way and Kid nailed Razor by accident. The referee saw this and disqualified Razor.
After the match, Vince McMahon entered the ring and interviewed both Razor and Kid. Kid then basically rips Razor for treating him like crap and even mentions how Razor cost him his match against Douglas this past weekend on Superstars. Kid then challenges him to a match next week on Raw saying he beat him before and will do it again. Razor accepts and the match is set for next week.
Next up, The Smoking Gunns took on The Brooklyn Brawler and Rad Radford. A quick match came to an end when the Gunns hit Brawler with the Sidewinder to win the match. The creepy Goldust (Dustin Rhodes I presume) is shown wearing a gold top hat in a vignette. Isaac Yankem DDS quickly takes out Scott Taylor in a squash match.
We are on to the main event where Shawn Michaels defends the Intercontinental Championship against "Pyscho" Sid. This is a main event that's long overdue in the making after Sid turned on Michaels the night after WrestleMania back in April where Michaels was out for six weeks due to a back injury due to being powerbombed three times.
This match was finally supposed to happen at SummerSlam, but oddly enough, the match was changed to Michaels vs. Razor Ramon in a WrestleMania X Ladder rematch, where Michaels won. Thanks to Eric Bischoff giving away the results on Nitro, we know Michaels won and retained the title not that I am surprised.
Well let's still get to the recap even though you know who won. Ted DiBiase interferes on Sid's behalf of course. Sid hits his Chokeslam and then set up to give him the Powerbomb, but Michaels back drops Sid out of it. Michaels goes on the offense with right hand punches and hits him with his flying clothesline and more punches then a flying cross body for the two-count.
Sid kicks him in the gut and throws him into the ropes, but misses a clothesline as Michaels gives him Sweet Chin Music to the gut. Michaels then gives him Sweet Chin Music to the face and one more time for good measure to get the big man off his feet to defeat him and retain the Intercontinental Title like Eric Bischoff said as he's apparently psychic.
Michaels celebrates with his buddy "Big Daddy Cool" Diesel as Dok Hendrix interviews them about their upcoming match against the WWF Tag Team Champions Owen Hart and Yokozuna at In Your House with all three WWF Men's Championships on the line.
If Diesel and Michaels win, they get the Tag Team titles to go along with their respective titles. If Diesel is pinned, then he loses the WWF Championship, same for Michaels if he's pinned then he loses his Intercontinental Championship to whoever pins him.
Diesel ends the interview by saying their not just Two Dudes with Attitudes, but "two chaps with all the straps."
