We are live from Phoenix, AZ for this week's episode of Monday Nitro with our hosts as usual Eric Bischoff, Bobby Heenan, still with a Japanese flag, and Steve McMichael.
First match up is for the WCW World Tag Team Championship as Harlem Heat defend the titles against The American Males. It's mentioned that the Males defeated Harlem Heat to win the titles on the Nitro the night after Fall Brawl, only to lose them back to Harlem Heat a month or so later. Phoenix Suns forward AC Green is in the audience as Booker T gets into it with him.
The American Males are supposed to be the faces, but they are getting booed while the Harlem Heat are heels, but are getting a mix of boos and cheers. Marcus Bagwell hits a Fisherman Suplex on Stevie Ray, but only gets a two-count. The Harlem Heat hit the Harlem Hangover on Bagwell to win the match and retain the titles.
Gene Okerlund is with Sting and Lex Luger telling us that the two of them will be in a Triangle match with Ric Flair at Starrcade with the winner to get a WCW World Heavyweight Championship match.
Sting tells Luger that if Luger wins the title tonight, don't think that Sting will hold back on him when he wins the Triangle match at Starrcade because they're friends. Luger agrees with Sting and basically the same will go with him when Luger wins the title tonight from Macho Man.
Sting takes on Kurasawa next. Eric Bischoff mentions that Ric Flair and The Giant are placed on "probation" by the WCW Board of Directors for their recent actions. Sting gives Kurasawa the Stinger Splash and makes him submit to the Scorpion Death Lock for the win.
The Giant next takes on Scott Norton. Norton tries to jump off the top rope, but jumps right into The Giant's massive hand and he gives Norton a Chokeslam for the 1-2-3.
After the commercial break, Gene Okerlund interviews Ric Flair, who is coming to the ring with none other than Phoenix Suns superstar Charles Barkley. The Phoenix crowd is actually booing Barkley because he's with Flair. Flair says Barkley is the greatest NBA player ever. Barkley says that Phoenix has the best fans. Flair says Barkley might be a Horsemen sometime.
It's time for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship main event between Randy Savage and Lex Luger. This is only the second world title match on Nitro and Luger has both of them. Luger tries to shake hands with Savage, but Savage attacks him.
Despite Savage having the bad arm, it was Savage working on Luger's arm and Savage was in control until missing a Double Axe Handle from the top rope to the outside when he crashed into the guardrail. Luger sent him into the ring and beat him down.
Meanwhile, Jimmy Hart unties the top turnbuckle and the metal is exposed. Luger tries to send Savage into the metal turnbuckle, but Savage blocks it and smashes Luger's head into it. As Luger falls back, he falls back into the referee which sends the ref to the floor.
Savage hits the Flying Elbow off the top rope, but there is no ref to count the pin. Savage then grabs Hart and brings him into the ring. Ric Flair comes out and nails Savage with brass knuckles. Hart then puts an unconscious Luger on top of an unconscious Savage.
Flair celebrates by styling and profiling his way up the aisleway, but Hulk Hogan is behind him and he chases Flair into the ring. He grabs Flair but lets go of him when the ref wakes up and starts counting Luger's pin as Hogan broke up the pin by hitting Luger to get Savage disqualified and keeping the title around Savage's waist.
Hogan pulls Hart into the ring and bashes both Hart and Luger's heads together and attacks both. He is about to hit Luger but Sting comes down and pushes Luger out of the way as Sting is punched by Hogan. Sting gets up and pushes Hogan as the two were face-to-face until Savage separates the two.
After the commercial break, Hogan wants to know who's side Sting is on. Sting says he's on Hogan's side but that Luger is his best friend and is trying to change Luger. Sting says he's sick of Hogan and everyone doubting Luger and not giving him a fair chance. Hogan says Savage was right about Luger all along.
Sting says he and Hogan need to be on the same page next week on Nitro as they take on Ric Flair and Arn Anderson. Hogan says he wants Sting to keep Luger out of his face, same with Savage as Sting says he'll do his best as the trio embraces and we are out.
